Master Training

In the past, apprentice painters learnt their craft in the workshop of a master.Starting as errand boys, they progressed gradually to journeyman, with the hope of eventually becoming a Master Painter themselves.During such an apprenticeship, they became familiar with the secrets and tricks of the trade, at least those of their master.

The Klassieke Academie has a similar aim; although much compressed (we don’t offer the chance to grow up in a workshop), it is much more versatile: an elementary professional training through a series of master classes, given by experienced artists.

Fourth year

The fourth year is divided into six blocks of five weeks. Each block concentrates on a different ‘Master Class’. The form is completely free, either at the Academie or elswhere, depending on what the Master wants.
In each Master Class, the artist in question is actually teaching ‘himself’: how he sets up and tackles a painting, mixes a palette, etc. They may let the students practise studies on site, which they will then discuss, or they will set assignments. They may even discuss the participants’ ‘own’ work. Whatever the approach, students will be started off on their own ‘track’, which they will have to flesh out themselves over the course of the block. At the end of the block, the results will be discussed with the Master.
Thus the students will visit six different ‘artist worlds’ in a row, with different approaches, and different solutions for painting problems.

In addition, the Academie is reviving drawing or painting from a model in a prolonged pose, long missing from West European art teaching.
