V - Studio Course

Art is a lonely profession, as many have found after their art course has ended. Humans are social beings and many of us are unable to deal with the solitude and give up.This is why the Klassieke Academie deliberately integrates practising working alone in a studio into its courses.
This is not free of obligation, however – students prepare work for a final exhibition with regular feedback from both Academy lecturers and Master artists.

Fifth year

Own studio
After the fourth year, students mainly work in their own studio situation – among other things to familiarize them with the solitary nature of the profession. This year is divided into three blocks, each of 10 weeks. Every week, following a timetable, the work of some of the students will be discussed by the practical lecturers from the first to third years. At the end of each block a collective meeting will be organized (three in total), which two of the artists whose Master Classes were followed will attend, and where the development in each person’s work will be examined.

Drawing from a model
Simultaneously with the discussions, the other students will be able to draw or paint from a model in an adjacent room. A model will be available for two half days.

Guest lecturers
In addition, there is a programme of 30 lessons by guest lecturers planned, including some from abroad if possible (by invitation or within the framework of an international exchange).

Preparation for the profession
The following theory blocks will be presented:

10 lessons in preparation for the profession (guest lectures about the knowledge needed for a liberal profession, varying from VAT accounts to types of presentations)
10 lessons in ‘art to order’, particularly the know-how needed when accepting and implementing art commissions, and finally10 guest lectures by ‘successful’ artists about their practical experiences and survival strategies. This may well take place within the framework of some of the guest lectureships.
(This part of the programme can also be followed by graduates at a discount.)

Exchanges/working periods/excursions
This year may also incorporate exchanges with other (foreign) Academies, long-term working periods at distant locations may be organized (Artist in Residence), as well as trips to cities and biennials, etc.

Exhibition
The work done in the own studio will result in a contribution to an exhibition.

Museum 'De Buitenplaats'
Museum 'De Buitenplaats'

From spring 2010, this exhibition will be held in the museum for figurative art ‘De Buitenplaats’ in Eelde, and should be regarded as the start of actual life as an artist rather than as the conclusion of something.

Certificate
The study will be rounded off with the awarding of a certificate.
