The Klassieke Academie for painting holds an unusual position among art academies in the Netherlands.

The Klassieke Academie is an independent arts training programme, unsupported by grants. It was founded in 2005 and is run by classically trained artists. The goal is an idealistic one – the transfer of specialist knowledge to new generations. Unlike the usual, grant-assisted art education, the starting point is not the artistic concept but the profession, the know-how and the craft, the tools of the trade.
Students are taught how to master the tools of a visual artist; the actual artistic processing is their personal affair and will flow from their own, unique, personality.

It goes without saying that the Klassieke Academie also aims to develop the content side of the profession, but driven by the artists themselves rather than by the powers that be.

The rigorous monitoring of quality is also exceptional. Admission is not only the result of successfully passing an entrance exam (no more than 20 students are admitted each year), each year development will be tested against a number of assessment criteria – those who do not reach the right standard will have to stop their studies.

On the other hand, those who make it to the end will have a realistic prospect of success as independent artists on the art market. During the final phase, attention will be paid to the various aspects of professional practice and the Academie will do its utmost to position its graduates in the art market – helped by the fact that an economically flourishing part of the current art market is eagerly on the lookout for new, highly trained talent.
